If you need to make complex calculations on your data, use Calc to extract data from your database and do the math. IOW, use the right tool for the job! Build the order/stockkeeping/invoicing system on top of a database (using OOo.Base if you like). This is akin to demonstrating the versatility of a pair of pliers by pounding nails with it. You're trying to demonstrate how useful a spreadsheet is by stretching its abilities beyond what it's meant to do. I won't even mention stockout conditions / back order handling (oops, I just did, now didn't I (-:: )Ĭalc is built to extract meaningful info from existing data, not to modify data in a database. (If I'm not mistaken, you'd need both the cobweb and the macros.) Searching is also more efficient in a database. Keeping the same thing in a spreadsheet is probably possible, either by using a cobweb of formulas, or by using macros to perform the data changes an SQL update query would do. Building a table for your order, then using that to update the inventory and invoicing tables, is a fairly trivial thing to do with a query in a database. Like you state yourself several times, you're working in database territoty here. Lets hope I persevere and make this work.lol This is merely a little pet project at the moment to demonstrate the capabilities of OO as well as helping me improve my spreadsheet skills. Obviously there are more complicated issues beyond these but I think that if I can get this puzzle solved the rest will follow. The idea here is to keep things simple and user friendly. How do I make the program deduct the correct qty of product from the main product database when this is done? How do I make the program transfer the required data to the invoice template to create a line on the invoice? How do I make the program search for something in the product file based on search criteria as input by the user on the invoice remplate? What I currently need most is formatting tips for the end user documents. I have set up a basic template for the main invoice and are setting up fictitious databases for things like the product file and the creditors and debtors files. I know exactly what functions my little program needs to have, putting all my ideas into a workable solution is the difficult part. I have extensive experience in using pos programs having worked in many different departments. Keep remote and distributed teams, and your entire organization, focused on their goals, projects, and tasks with Asana. I'm hoping all you experts out there might consider handing out a tip or two in aid of my project. I'm not very clued up on using formulas and external links and such so hence my posting here. I started a little project to experiment writing a little point of sales program for small businesses using OO3.1.
